Bishop Samy Fawzy: Developing Education Begins with Understanding Each Child’s Needs

Cairo – Tuesday, September 1, 2026

Under the patronage of His Grace Bishop Dr. Samy Fawzy, Archbishop of the Episcopal Province of Alexandria, the Education and Early Childhood Program, affiliated with the Education Sector of the Episcopal Church, implemented the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology in a number of the Church’s nurseries. The initiative aims to strengthen children’s educational skills and enhance their ability to learn according to their actual learning levels.

The methodology was implemented under the supervision of Madeline Soustanis, Director of the Education Sector, and Dr. Jehan Eissa, Director of the Education and Early Childhood Program, with the participation of 32 members of the service teams working in the areas of El-Tebin, Ain Shams, El-Salam, Ezbet El-Nakhl, Ras El-Bar, and Suez.

The three-month implementation period, which took place during the summer, focused on grouping children according to their actual learning levels rather than relying solely on their age or grade level. This approach enabled educators to provide learning activities tailored to the needs of each level, helping children acquire foundational skills before moving on to more advanced ones.

Bishop Dr. Samy Fawzy said that investment in education begins with genuine attention to the needs of every child. He emphasized that developing educational approaches that take individual differences into account contributes to building a strong foundation for children’s growth and their capacity to learn. He noted that implementing the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology represents an important step toward developing educational practices in the Episcopal Church’s nurseries.

Bishop Samy Fawzy praised the efforts of the teams and teachers involved in implementing the methodology, stressing the importance of continuing to develop education and early childhood programs and providing a supportive and stimulating learning environment. Such efforts, he said, help children develop their skills and abilities while giving them a strong foundation for the next stages of their education.

The Education Sector stated that implementing the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology had a tangible positive impact on the children. It also enabled the teams to further develop approaches to reviewing curricula and educational activities in ways that respond to the children’s actual needs.

The Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology is an educational approach that has received significant international attention in recent decades, particularly in addressing learning gaps and strengthening foundational skills in reading, writing, and numeracy. The methodology was developed by Pratham, an organization in India, and its approach has since been adopted in a number of countries across Asia and Africa.

The implementation period concluded with graduation celebrations for the children in the various service areas, marking the progress they had made throughout the program. The celebrations were attended by teams, children, and their families, creating an atmosphere that reflected the成果 of the efforts made to support the educational process in the nurseries.

The Episcopal Church’s focus on education and early childhood programs comes as part of its commitment to developing educational services for children and providing a learning environment that supports the development of their skills and abilities while taking into account their diverse needs.
