Harpur Memorial Hospital – Menouf

About Us

Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf was established by Dr. Frank Harpur, an Anglican Christian missionary from Ireland. Dr. Harpur sailed up the Nile into the Delta region in a boat used as a floating hospital, receiving patients and treating them both physically and spiritually. He opened a permanent hospital in Menouf in 1910 at the request of the local authorities, and since then the hospital, a ministry of the Anglican Diocese of Egypt, has continued to grow. The hospital began as a collection of clinics but has grown to a hospital with over 75 beds, 3 ORs, a NICU, ICU, outpatient clinics that can see up to 1000 patients per day and around 250 employees. The hospital is classified in Egypt as a private charity hospital. As such, it does not receive government support, but also does not charge the high prices of a private hospital.

In the last decade, the hospital has seen significant growth in its training programs, facilities and services. In 2013, an American surgeon started a general surgery residency through the Pan African Academy for Christian Surgeons (PAACS). The program promotes excellence in care and rigorous academic standards, hosting visiting surgeons who teach in their specialties and teach the residents how to use specialized equipment.

Harpur Memorial Hospital has also felt an acute need for trained nurses and in 2017 started the Harpur Nursing Training Center to train its nurses in a two-year program. It has elevated the level of the nurses at the hospital and hopes to become a licensed nursing institute in the future.

In 2023 the hospital also started a program for training Internal Medicine Physicians in coordination with Christian Academy of African Physicians (CAAP). This program focuses on training Egyptian physicians at a level comparable to the US or Europe.
