About

The Deaf Unit was established in 1982 as a ministry of the Episcopal Church, and was registered with Social Affairs No. 4014 for the year 1993 AD, in the name of the Nardin Society for Social Services. The unit is concerned with rehabilitating the deaf and hard of hearing to integrate into society through academic education from the age of 4 years until the third grade of middle school, speech, vocational training in carpentry, tents, tailoring, accessories, drawing activities, computers, football, and educational and recreational trips.
The Nardin Association provides psychological and health support and medicines for free during the year. The association also has a permanent exhibition of handicrafts throughout the year. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for hearing-impaired children, youth and families through education, vocational training and spiritual guidance to give them a chance for employment, financial independence and for successful integration into society in Egypt.

Deaf Unit Ministries: School

01. School

The Deaf Unit provides a bilingual primary and middle school for deaf children based in Cairo, Egypt. At the school, the children learn standard Egyptian Sign Language. Within the first month of being there, they are usually able to communicate with each other. They also learn Arabic, so that they can communicate through writing with the hearing community. All children start schooling at age 5 for primary school and continue to middle school at the age of 17, then students will go to government high school. Before that, they take classes at the Deaf Unit and go to government schools for exams twice a year, which are mid-year exams and final exams. Students receive certification after they pass all exams in primary and middle school.
Our students come from both Muslim and Christian homes and often are from families where both parents and other siblings are hearing. This situation frequently leads to misunderstanding in the family. Therefore, at the Deaf Unit, we seek to provide opportunities for better communication between deaf and hearing people. We offer classes once a week to the parents and people within the local community. The classes teach sign language, help educate them on incorrect stereotypes of the deaf, and give them the opportunity to build connections with other families that have deaf children.

02. Vocational Training

Our aim is to improve the quality of life of young, youth, women deaf and hearing impaired by providing and facilitating access to employment and income in order to promote their social and financial independence.

Marriage and family counseling sessions are also available for the families of deaf children, as a healthy home atmosphere is essential for the positive growth of the whole family.
For Deaf Unit Staff: we offer three courses during the year to provide our teachers with the most updated training in English, computers, sign language and new methods of deaf education.
