Cairo – Saturday, May 16, 2026
Archbishop Dr. Samy Fawzy, Archbishop of the Alexandria Province of the Episcopal/Anglican Church, concluded the sessions of the Diocese of Egypt Synod (the Church’s highest governing body) for 2026, held under the diocesan theme “A Living Church for a Better Society,” in the presence of priests, representatives of churches and ministries, and committee members, at All Saints’ Episcopal Cathedral in Zamalek. The Synod sessions were organized by Rev. Canon Medhat Sabry, Secretary of the Synod.
In his closing address, the Archbishop affirmed that the Church is called to be alive and active within society, emphasizing that the Synod carries a forward-looking vision aimed at strengthening the Church’s spiritual and societal role in the coming years through joint work, prayer, planning, and service.
The meetings included various discussion groups and workshops over three days, during which participants addressed key questions raised by the Synod, particularly Workshop Three titled “From Words to Action – The Next Five Years and Beyond.” This workshop aimed to move from diagnosis and vision-setting to practical, measurable, and implementable steps.
The discussions addressed several key questions, including: What do our churches agree upon? What can the Church not accomplish alone? What is the first step that can be taken within the next 30 days? And how can the implementation of agreed actions be sustained? The sessions also explored future perspectives regarding the challenges and aspirations facing the Church in the coming phase.
The Synod issued a set of key recommendations, emphasizing the importance of continuing the Church’s spiritual and community services in a more effective and impactful way, particularly in children’s ministry, women’s ministry, prison ministry, youth ministry, family ministry, prayer ministry, evangelism ministry, and discipleship ministry. It also stressed the development of pastoral and developmental initiatives that serve society and strengthen the Church’s mission.
The Synod further emphasized that the Church must be a truly “living Church,” capable of making a real impact on society and individuals through active presence, continuous service, and responsiveness to human needs.
The closing session included a tribute to Dr. Magdy Boutros, Professor of Economics at the American University in Cairo and Diocesan Treasurer, in appreciation of his service and contributions over the past ten years.
In line with the Church’s commitment to inclusion and accessibility, full English interpretation was provided throughout the Synod sessions, along with sign language interpretation for the deaf and hard of hearing, ensuring full participation for all attendees.
