Today, Archbishop Dr. Samy Fawzy, Archbishop of the Province of Alexandria of the Episcopal/Anglican Church, and Archbishop Dr. Mouneer Hanna, Director of the Christian-Islamic Center and Honorary Archbishop, took part in the 10th Global Fatwa Conference organized by Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta and the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide. The conference is held under the patronage of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, under the title: “The Making of the Wise Mufti in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
The conference serves as an international platform to discuss the future of fatwa institutions amid the technological revolution. It provides an opportunity for religious and academic institutions from around the world to exchange experiences and establish scientific frameworks and standards for training contemporary muftis — individuals capable of combining deep jurisprudential knowledge with an understanding of the digital reality and the challenges and opportunities brought by artificial intelligence.
The conference addresses several main themes, including the formation of the contemporary wise mufti, fatwa issuance in the age of artificial intelligence, the challenges faced by muftis in dealing with AI, and how artificial intelligence can contribute to developing institutional fatwa work. It also highlights the experiences of various fatwa institutions worldwide in building the wise mufti model suited for the AI era.
Over two days, the sessions will witness the launch of several initiatives, research projects, and training programs aimed at strengthening the capacities of muftis and enhancing the integration between Islamic jurisprudence and modern technologies. These efforts affirm Egypt’s position as a leading global reference in contemporary fatwa practice at both the regional and international levels.
