Archbishop of the Episcopal Church Participates in the Commemoration of the Council of Nicaea

Today, Archbishop Dr. Samy Fawzy, Archbishop of the Episcopal/Anglican Province of Alexandria, Rev. Yashua Bakhit, Secretary General of the Council of Churches of Egypt, and Rev. Fayez Nady, pastor of Ain Shams and Salam Episcopal Churches, took part in the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325–2025). The event was held in remembrance of the influence of Saint Athanasius the Apostolic, the hero of the Council of Nicaea.

The Archbishop affirmed the Episcopal Church’s commitment to ecumenical dialogue and promoting unity among different churches. This participation highlights the active role of the Episcopal Church in Egypt and North Africa in supporting efforts to foster mutual understanding and cooperation among Christian denominations. He also prayed that this occasion would inspire deeper ecumenical dialogue and greater service to humanity everywhere.

The Archbishop expressed his joy at being among church leaders from various Christian traditions, emphasizing that this historic gathering represents a sign of hope and a step toward greater unity and reconciliation. He said: “Today, we are celebrating not only the memory of the Council of Nicaea, but also the shared faith that unites us, and the importance of joint action in facing the challenges of our world with the spirit of the Gospel and reconciliation.”

It is worth noting that the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea played a pivotal role in defining Christian doctrine. It issued the Nicene Creed, which affirmed the divinity of Christ and His equality with the Father. This anniversary is an opportunity to renew commitment to the principles established by that historic council.
