Itang used to be the home of the largest refugee camp in the world, made up mostly of Dinkas who have since returned to South Sudan. St Mary’s Itang is a Nuer-speaking Mission Centre. The priest-in-charge is the Revd John Gach.
Following the outbreak of civil war in South Sudan in December 2013, two new refugee camps were formed near Itang locally known as Akule I and Akule II. There are three churches in these camps, the largest of which is St Simon of Cyrene, led by the Revd Nhial Thomas.
St Mary’s has other daughter churches including: St John’s Church in Makhat; Ngode; and Padang.
